GNCC Round 6 – Indy 100 – Gosport, IN
The pit area was filled with smiles as riders and spectators arrived for the inaugural Indy 100 in Gosport Indiana. Not only was everyone excited for a new facility, they were excited to be back racing after an unexpected 5 week break due to the postponement of the Loretta Lynn’s GNCC just 2 weeks prior.
When racing action got under way Saturday morning there was a familiar sight with Kristen Atwell grabbing the holeshot on her GBC backed #201 machine. Kristen ran up front throughout the day and despite losing ground in one of the many bottlenecks she ended the day in 2nd place and a solid 5th overall out of 274 riders. Kristen is known for getting faster as the season goes on, and it looks like 2011 is shaping up just the same. With round 7 being held in her home state of PA it seems the perfect place for Kristen to get a win.
Jay Shadron has continued to improve each race in 2011, and his Schoolboy A/B class win and 8th overall finish this weekend prove that this talented youngster is one to keep an eye on. The undefeated streak continues for utility +45 class winner Forrest Whorton who finished a season best 9th overall. Indiana’s own Garon Davis earned his 3rd win of 2011 in the sport class and now has a comfortable point lead heading into round 7. Kevin McKeown is another GBC backed rider who sits atop the points in his respective class, Kevin and his family have been logging many miles on the off weekends from GNCC racing to find places to race and it all paid off in Indiana with his 3rd class win of the season.
The skies were threatening as the afternoon race riders headed to the line. Jeff Pickens used quick reactions and the grip of his GBC Race Rex tires to pocket $250 for the XC1 holeshot. Unfortunately a broken spindle would end Jeff’s race early. The racing was intense throughout the day, and after the heavy rains came it got even more unpredictable. Bryan Cook soldiered through the treacherous conditions to earn 8th place in the XC1 class, followed closely by Kevin Yoho in 9th. In XC2 action Aarol Bright used his GBII XC’s to pull him through the slop for a 5th place finish. Ed Atwell’s 2nd place finish in the highly competitive +40 class kept him on top of the season points standings.
Round 7 of the GNCC series will be held May 28th in Patton PA at the new Rock Run facility. Be sure to stop and visit us in the GBC Motorsports area in the pro pits for free stickers and up to date info on all things GBC!
