GBC Race Report: Penton GNCC a Success for GBC Mounted Racers

As one of the longest-running stops on the GNCC tour, the John Penton GNCC in Millfield, OH always carries a little bit of extra anticipation coming into the event. The weather is often a topic of discussion as well with the Sunday Creek facility being known for both epic mud fests and scorching temperatures over the years. This year riders were treated to near-perfect conditions with 80 degree temps, and Friday night showers kept dust to a minimum.

GBC racers are steadily proving their holeshot ability in the XC1 ranks and this weekend was no different. Eric Hoyland used the grip of his XC-Masters to win the sprint to the first turn when the green flag dropped, earning the $250 prize. There was quite a battle between BNR’s Kevin Yoho and Johnny Gallagher over the 5th place spot with Gallagher making the pass on the final lap to secure 5th place on the day. “I struggle early on but put my head downa nd charged my way to the checkers. The GBC XC-Masters worked awesome out there in the slick conditions,” Gallagher said after his 2nd to top-5 finish of 2013. “It was a good race and I couldn’t be happier with the way everything is working.” Yoho currently holds down a career-best 5th place in the overall rankings. Jeff Pickens put in another solid ride on his XC-Racer equipped Yamaha to earn 8th on the day. Gabe Phillips followed Jeff home in 9th place giving GBC 4 of the top-10 riders.

GBC grabbed 3 class wins in Morning race action with Rob Smith leading the way by grabbing the U2 class win, the Utility Overall, and placing 2nd AM Overall out of more than 260 racers aboard his GBC Dirt Commander equipped Can-Am. Bryan Buckhannon continued the perfect season with his 7th straight win in the 4×4 Open class. Forrest Whorton topped the 4×4 Senior class for the 4th time this season.

Other outstanding finishes by GBC racers included Jay Shadron 2nd (College A), Scott Day 2nd (4×4 Lites), Daryk Pitzer 2nd (College B), Ryan Smith 2nd (4×4 Novice), Todd Moskala 3rd (Schoolboy Novice), Shane Pitzer 3rd (Schoolboy Novice), Walt Shumacher 5th (Junior B), Brody Livengood 5th (XC2).

The next round of GNCC racing is the Mountaineer Run which takes place June 15-16 in Masontown, WV.
